Snow Removal

When a winter storm begins, Public Works crews monitor conditions and begin snow removal operations as needed. Depending on the intensity and duration of a storm, crews may need to make repeated passes over the same roads throughout the day or night.

During a major storm, the priority is to keep the primary transportation routes open and passable before moving into lower-priority areas. This means that some roads may receive attention before others.

Please remember: Seeing a snowplow on one road does not mean that other areas are being overlooked. Crews are following an established snow removal plan designed to address the community's most important transportation routes first.

Snow removal generally follows a priority system based on the importance of the roadway and the need to maintain access throughout the community.

Priority 1 — Primary Roads

The first priority is maintaining the Town's primary roads and major transportation routes. These roads provide critical access through Brian Head and are essential for emergency response, residents, businesses, visitors, and other community services.

Priority 2 — Secondary Roads

Once primary roads are adequately cleared and conditions allow, crews move to secondary roads and additional routes throughout Town.

Priority 3 — Residential and Lower-Traffic Roads

Residential streets and lower-traffic areas are addressed after the higher-priority routes have been cleared. During prolonged or heavy storms, these roads may require additional time before crews can reach them.

The priority system may be adjusted based on weather conditions, emergencies, road conditions, equipment needs, and other circumstances.

During significant snowfall, residents and visitors should expect:

• Snowplows and other heavy equipment operating throughout the community.

• Repeated snow removal passes as snowfall continues.

• Snow being pushed or deposited along the sides of roadways and in driveways.

• Roads that may remain snow-covered or icy during and immediately after a storm.

• Additional time needed to clear secondary and residential roads.

• Crews working around the clock when conditions require continuous operations.

Snow removal is an ongoing process during a storm. A road that has been cleared may need to be cleared again as additional snow falls.

Residents and visitors can help make snow removal safer and more efficient by following a few simple guidelines:

Please keep vehicles off Town roads whenever possible during snow removal operations. Parked vehicles can prevent plows from safely clearing the full width of the roadway and can significantly slow down snow removal.

Please also:

• Keep vehicles, trailers, recreational equipment, and other objects out of the roadway.

• Do not follow snowplows too closely.

• Give snowplows and other Town equipment plenty of room to operate.

• Avoid unnecessary travel during severe winter storms.

• Be patient when crews are working in your area.

• Be prepared for snow to be pushed toward the edge of the roadway and in front of driveways.

• Do not place snow from private property back into the Town roadway.

Snowplows are large, heavy pieces of equipment with limited visibility. For everyone's safety, please slow down and give snowplow operators plenty of space. Never pass a snowplow unless it is safe and permitted to do so.

Our crews are working to clear the roads as quickly and safely as possible. Your cooperation helps them do their job more effectively.

Town snowplows are responsible for clearing Town-maintained roadways. Property owners are responsible for clearing their own driveways and private property.

As plows clear the roadway, snow may be pushed or deposited in front of driveways. Unfortunately, this is sometimes unavoidable and is part of the snow removal process. Property owners should plan accordingly and wait until Town crews have completed their snow removal operations before clearing their driveway whenever possible.

Keeping Brian Head accessible during winter weather takes a team effort. Our Public Works employees work long hours and in challenging conditions to keep roads open and provide access for our community.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our residents, businesses, and visitors while our crews work through each storm. By understanding the snow removal process and helping keep roadways clear of parked vehicles and other obstacles, you can help our crews get the job done faster and safer.
